pattern seeking

human innately look for patterns in the world around them.  Often we are looking for causes, or at least correlations.  We look for patterns and apply meaning even when there is none.

Pattern seeking has helped us survive by mapping the world around us.

For example - we notice that winds can precede a storm, we notice a rock on mars that looks like a human face, we remember behaviour and indications that someone is angry with us
